14 June 1972 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Walked w. Reim. Looked at exhibits & zoo. Returned to Praia Flamenca. 15 June 1972. For Thurs. Went to BPONPM - RADAM office in Urca, and talked w. Dr. Russell about radar Amazon survey, but received no additional information (Zinke expected soon). Then went to Museu Nacional (Trigon line gone all the way) and lunchd and talked w. Peres. He made phone calls for me. Then to Jardim Botanico, where tried to locate Dr. Vandeleut; unavailable. The garden is 10 a + acres, I think, and considerable botanical research staff concentrated to it, and large library. Much forest on hills above, toward Tijuca (?). Returned to hotel. 16 June 1972. Friday Spent most of day on reports & letters. In evening to train station (Rodoviaria), where took bus to Vitoria. Station large & lively, no buses to Brasilia, Salvador, Porto Alegre, & many distant ports. 17 June 1972. Arrived Vitoria about 0800. From hour before, green-green hills cropped short, cattle, granite outcrops, and patches humid forest on some slopes. Vitoria a seaport, w. large vessels. Another mod. town. Waited for bus to Sta. Teresa. Have bare granite hills around town, and patches trees on slopes. Took bus 1300 for Santa Maria Teresa, about 2000' ups. Patches forest on hills, green. Museum "Mello Leitao" area a few blocks from center of town. About 1/5 acre, gardens, w. scattered buildings, cages. Ruschi bird on jet, w. wife, daughter. Two Rose Craps Boys, Paulo Abravalia & Erik Longera, lived adjacent; worked on rose manure, plants, & helped Ruschi (57 yrs.). Some small workshops in cages, including at least 3 Leontidius chapmaneri, and some tinamous (tinamus), curassows toecerus, other. But mostly hummingbirds - outdoor cages, indoor in one building, various sizes, and about 20 species coming to feeder on patch of flowers. We were put up in house donated by Crawford Greenwalt, 2 bds, kitchen, modern. Jaguar - Ruschi said one in reserve "Novo Lombois", 7000 ha, near Santa Teresa (and by his museum Museu Nacional). Also F. pardalis & wiedii present.
