Nr. San Blas, Nayarit, Mexico
Hitched 2 riders, & walked to San Blas, about 37 kms. Lost
10 kms. through broken jungle patches, many palms but
some 100' large-leaved tree, strangler figs, other exotic
including flocks small & medium parrots. Last four
kms in mangrove area, w. patches cut. Many many
egrets, some cormorants - but many her birds, &
few water lilies, compared w. Santa Cruz area.
Town
nothing special - usual prices at local shops, but a
few fancy tourist shops too, many signs in English,
and a dozen or more U.S. license plates (mostly So
Calif.) seen; so rather gringo-eyed. But fishermen threw
rig nets, others walking on chinchorros on shore,
and some mera ruins of old buildings around.
Biting insects. Boats took people through mangrove water
trails to Tobara spring, for a stiff price. No luxurious
hotels seen, however. Miro market. We walked back on
road about 7 kms. to Sengayto, a small village, &
camped nearby. Saw large ibis feeding at foliage
on large jungle trees. Saw 8 cooties, including young,
of perhaps 1 lb., in one tree. Clear night. Heard an appar-
ent owl grunting, no caprimulgids (but saw one at
dusk).
19 October 1971. Various birds called in morning, including
parrots, droppelols, wagpie jays, black & yellow
cassique, woodpeckers. We walked 1 hrs. on
vereda leading from Sengayto to maremuse and
