C. Koford 26. Journal 12 June 1972 Belém, Brazil air surveys. Originally, field form had lines for animals present, but only used. No one seemed interested in wildlife survey at present. Teruyo thought INPA not doing much, organizing director monthly. He suggested Curuana area, Forest Reserva S. of Santarém, as study area (permission from Dr. Clara P.). Information from this gp. will eventually be useful. Went to Museu Izeldi. Small museum bld., about city block of grounds with trees + zoo animals - capybaras, tapirs, tucutus, macaws, & jaguars, 1 ocelot, 1 margay, marleys (spike - all black, not pitted, tail heavy, lucky heard except tip 10" = A. panthera?). Engler says on 5' dia'm Caila (sucvarona) said: planted 1896, flowered 1932, fruit 1940. Talked w/ Diretor, a botanist (for English), Dr. da Cunha (herpetologist). Letter said saw salamander about 5 cm. long here, on plants, low in daytime, not trans-located; rather common near Belém. Fernando Novoa, ornithologist, absent, traveling. Season now fairly dry, they told me, will be hot in July. They suggested Cay Chagas boat w/ Belém to source information. I decided to go on to Rio, to get proper letter introduction from Brazilian officials, so could stay at forest preserve, etc. Rain again after darks. At tourist store on Av. Vargas had a jaguar shed displayed in window (folds, or if tenues). 13 June 1972. Took 10 a.m. plane for Rio de Janeiro, about 4 hour flight. On Belém outskirts, large patches of forest. Then cloudy for an hour & so. Then woods in canyon broken by reddish high ground between, & less clouds. I don stay with ground drain, rare cultivation, babulunas, roads - red sand earth. Then more vegetation, some cultivated patches, and gradually more hilly as approached Rio, arriving about 2 p.m. Tried to telephone Fernando da Pires at museum, not home in Petropolis - not
