C. Koford 25 Journal 11 June 1972. Sunday To: Belém, Para, Brazil where mostly clear, steamy clouds over tritularin ridges. Land has small undulations, not flat. Some patches of bare ground, perhaps a few for 100 m. drain. (Censo?). Bps. Jell'd ground. But mostly bushing trees, and water. Water isolated many individual houses. Plenty cover for large cats. Several aspect like mangrove coastal swamps of Naysint, with ragged edges wet areas, many isolated "stringers" patches. Probably hunting rather than lack cause limited jaguar pop. / Belém about 4 or million. Many regions of coast surrounded by grand river - fountaines, lamp posts, tile faced buildings. Some modern buildings. But thrany street & walks in bad repair - something like Naysint w/o tourists. Intriguing waterfront-boats, shelters now, many open markets for blocks near waterfront. / We rode around in buses. Walled in Bosque Rodriguez Alves (Low 3 agents, topic today), urban 190's structure, children playground, some caged animals. Native trees to 100,' and birds present - good for weekday bird-watching. / Belém has some breeze, much drier now than Manaus, but a hard evening shower. 12 June 1972. Mon.
