9 June 1972. Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil.
of that preserve. He was radical & showed me the grounds, which
included about 1 acre enclosure w. small root and birds therein
(sonibell, scarletbill, screech-owl, others). He had friend from Matucuba
who collected bats here. Dr M. Beck yesterday from visit to station. Said I
could stay at station if desired. He had good fishing for native - hunt w/o
dogs, many plants around lodges, main air conditioning, etc. / In
Manaus, near waterfront, on airport office w. jaguar or caju; in
site, a magay skin on motorcycle seat (under plastic), but no quan-
tity for sale. A tourist store, "Do Pessaro" near cathedral, had
skins maguayo, small jaguar, many other mammals, for sale.
Also godite of ocelot (?) tails. / Apart store had array of guns
including pistols, 2 bbl. shotgun, muzzle loaders, .22 rifle, &
available (how daily?). Peace Corps men said
ammo. So guns could be carried outside cities. / Several records of bird recordings

spent a week on sand & then up river - said saw very little wildlife,
occasional monkey. In one area, "carboeiro" working and had
cleared off the forest. (Heavy erosion some sites. Dr. Machado
had also displayed destruction of forests - and replanting of Cailli-
san Pina (also in Venezuela), eucalyptus.
10 June 1972. Saturday. Visited "zoológico" at "guerra do
selva" base of army in Sao Jorge, edge of Manaus. Fair
collection of major native mammals, some turtles & large
birds, including 2 jaguaras. / Very hard rain yesterday morning flooded
the plaza central.
11 June 1972. To airport early & departed on Cruzeiro do Sul jet for Belém,
leaving 0545. Flew near river, but mostly low clouds obscured,
