Caracas, Venezuela.
Possibly he will finish his book and include there. He did not know who Ojasti was (from game div.), & latter seemed convinced that R. & pals were hunting illegally. R. casually invited me to go with them in "verano." Never asked for reprints on cats. Very cordial & good humored. Ojasti said lots for preserve later. Apure & Descaro never explaining, to demonstrate value protector. He had asked w. copyboys mainly near La Trinidad, mr. Rio Aragua. | We went to airport about midnight.
8 June 1972. Departed about 6 a.m. on Varig for Managua, arriving about 0630. Only tops of clouds visible until last 15 min., over solid forest. Airport facilities poor. Bus to town. Finally stayed at tiny Hotel Mario, about one block W. of cathedral. | Obtained some local info from Livraria Crista, near main plaza near waterfront. Visited FUNAI (Found. Nat. for Indians) at 93 - Noboro, but now there spoke English or Spanish (S. Nunez F. away for a week; N. Smith helper). Visited shop Casa do Diijo - floor, next to Hotel Novorindo. Richard Melnygl (of Rochester, N.Y.) sells native crafts, canua, blowguns, etc. He exports articles to U.S. too. He thought restrictions on skin trade had raised skin prices. Most Indians hunt as part of regular life and know only that animal skins can be sold. Cat tails, jaguar teeth, used in Indian products. This store a good source of local info. Learned that INPA office in Manaus; went there (116 G. Moreira) and made appt. to see Director, Dr. Almeida Moreira. Later taken there, to new buildings about 6 Km. distant. He had 7 scientists. One from U. Fls. working on fish. Main interests seemed malaria. But losing interest veget. or wildlife. They have 10,000h. preserve mr. Km. 26 to N.; said formerly a jaguar there. They had some interest in survey of vertebrate
