Caracas, Venezuela
Pendo, on highway 2 (Melado Melvin Neville has been studying red howlers there). In 1944, jaguar there - until 1956, then none. Moreide said to have seen a jaguar in Feb. 1972 near Baranana, SE Panama, in wooded palm area; jaguar killed 19 cattle in 4 weeks. He saw many tracks along watercourses there. Still jaguars S of San Felipe, Yaracuy. (Blohm had various instances of seeing one close to Caracas long ago.) Some say jaguars peninsular of lake Ocumare [now Pto. Cabello, Corobobo], Caratagua, S of Caracas. In [illegible] area, W of Pts. Cedello, hope to make presence of about 20,000 h. (land area about 76,000h) in coastal swampy areas. Blohm said ocelote, Pridatura, on his ranch. (Bird watching goes there too). He said that at Panama, island in Corocoro m., Pts. Cabello (?), a jaguar (me?) came away right and ate turtles, about 3 km. from nearest mainland (assume swam out & back). Jag. skin price 1000 B, ocelot 200, now!
In afternoon, Ojasti accompanied me to visit Rodolfo Romero; jaguar hunter who had sent articles in Caza y Pesca. Romer was boss of a pharmaceutical firm. A big man, probably about 40. He's hunting friend Hector -, from a bank, also came - but said little as Romer talked much and enthusiastically about jaguars and hunting. They had plane, dogs, cars, assistants. Usually started hunting in Dec. They had taken [illegible] out, in winter. He had large jag. skull (about 205 length) mounted on desk, a big box with about 20 others (no numbers or labels, but most distinctive, as from flattened bullet holes). He claimed to be doing a big book on tiger hunting. He did have set of good 8 x 10 photo prints, largely of dead jaguaras, + some in color (an 11 x 14 or larger or well). They were miffed that jag.
