Paracho Grande, Venezuela.
of Caza y Pesca [illegible] antíleo. I spent most of day skimming through the texts, in Spanish. There is a Federación Venezolana de Caza y Conservación (FEVECA). Also a hunter club. / Rainier.
7 June 1972. J. Ojasti drove me to Caracas, and to the office of Bienestar Rural, Dr. Mandolfi (Cornell grad.). He arrived about 10 am, & was cordial, active - telepathic hunter, other. On phone I talked w/ Federico de Friés (P. Angelica, Av. Principal, Altamira; 33-4600), owner of ranch "El Praveni" about 10 km. S. of Barquisimeto,
(Laventa Co. - "Uragua")
Again, & adjacent to lands of Cis. Inglesa. De F. speaks excellent English. Said had ranch 18 yrs. Always 6-8 jaguars, not increase. In mating season, wander for outside boundaries. Ranch 46,000 h; jags occupy about 50,000 h. Adj. ranch give bounty for jags. Poachers common. Lately have seen only 3-4; can go 3 miles w/o seeing one. He thinks doomed in Vevay. Thinks cubs low over 4-5 mo. period, near start dry season (Dec.). Best dry condition April. Food mainly turtles, carinans, capybara - occasionally a calf. The jaguar area now flooded & poorly accessible. de Friés very clear and concise, his data probably good area for field work. / Another protected area, Noto "La Trinidad," along Rio Arauca between Chara and Menticul in Apure. This is where Ojasti studied capybaras. Owner José Natalio Estela. / Mandolfi marked many jaguar areas on maps. Ticiopos area W of Barinas now has agriculture & lumbering, tho a forest preserve. Colombian hunt in SW Barinas region. Some jaguars SW of L. Mara-caybo. In Edo. Guairis, S. - some thick forest w/ jaguars (listu- [or "caicaro"] Colmata (pop.? ) and 60 mi. E?). Swampy area N. Maracay. Mt. Alamalique (state?). Guatopo N.P., SE of Caracas - prob. a few jags.
