June 1972.
Rancho Grande, Venezuela
During day, men cleared many Bromeliads from the near building, & cut them up looking for vertebrates. They took several frogs, including some w/
eggs on back. I talked w/ Gonzalo Medina about jaguars. He had been here 15 years, his father a hunter. He said that National Guard was supposed to help w/ game law enforcement, but actually did little. He said they had no statistics on numbers of licenses, or nos. of their confiscations. They had confiscated (central locations) several jaguar skins, and hundreds of ocelot skins from dealers. He said settlers kill jaguars and want to build them all. Night hunting illegal and seldom practiced. In Cds. Bolivia, often call w/ colobays. He said some still build w/ lance. Distribution - added that jaggs in Darien evergreen low forest of northern Cdo. Yaracuy, 4 preserves planned for there near coast for jaguars. He said many ocelots in delta region. Perhaps no jaguarin Angostique (diffused w/ Ojasti). Jags & ocelot in Denareva de Perija', but too bad studies there. A forest preserve in S W. Barinas (actually 2) had jaguars; legally no hunting in these, but actually much poaching. Hunters from Colombia come to Barinas. Lowlands of NE Bolivia had jaguar - hoped for preserve there (altaplannine de Naria or Jauiteca area). I Medina showed us small book on hunting tigers in V. (by Rene Lambin Diez). Then a file of Caza y Pesca magazine, which included dozens of articles on jaguar hunting, w/ much repetition of certain names such as Roena R. Römer, G. Velutini, R. Lambin Diez, + some large jaguar hunts in Colombia, Argentina, Guatemala. Many photos of hunter and kill. Some hunts probably many years ago - year rarely mentioned. But some worthy observations about behavior. I listed many refs. + some comments on separate sheet. Last two issues
