C. Kofard 14 Journal 2 June 1972 Villavicencio, Colombia north. | Roan especially in mating season, Jan-Feb. near coast. They call back and forth in the mangroves. | In Macareo area, many colobus now. Many peccaries there - colored usually 4-6, occa. 11, but white-lepped ones and her several movements; prominent fetal trade. One F.M. was now herd of sleeping peccaries when a jogian roared nearby or if to scatter them, but peccaries did not scatter. Certain palms are good agouti foods; jogians come to these. | Weather - F.M. says irregular dry season since 1967. Usually Feb. best for travel in lowlands to E. We slept in the old hotel. 3 June 1972 Sat. Bogotá. Eri we took 0730 bus (Bolívarico) for Cúcuta. Many trucks coming, and road difficult from rain, so slow. Arrived 11:15. Our plane flight had departed early, so we went to airport and got Caracas 6 (1 hr time ch.) p.m. on Air France flight to Caracas, arriving about 8:10. Into Caracas and took line in Nuevo Cíes area for Maracay, over 100 km. SW. Then took taxi (30 b's) about 20 km. on Ocumare road to Rancho Grande, in H. Pittier Natl Park. There met Dr. Medina, who gave T. Collin's coll.F. us a room on top floor. (Charlie [illegible] sp.?) of Long Rock State Coll. During is her working on matrons & scripts. Paul Schwarz is her much of time. J. Ogasti lives in Maracay but visits her. Medina and some others live here - Medina has been here 15 yrs.). From big balcony, good view of Maracay + parts of bay. We arrived about 11 p.m. Rancho Grande, Venezuela 4 June 1972 Sunday. Wildlife museum of mounted specimens on lower floor. Cooking here is "every man for self." Restaurant ½ mile toward Maracay. We walked up path through forest ½ mile to spring. Neville Heard red howlers in distance (a student said to be studying sp.)
