CB Koford 12 Journal 2 June 1972 Bogota, Colombia We thought still fair jaguar population in various part of Bolivia, around Monpos (mangos too). Also, in northern N. de Santander, Tilar to Rio Ors. A petal co. had developed there, in fair forest, but abandoned (Madrisa). Arauca - very central, formerly many jaguars. About 15 yrs. ago she bought a skin for about 20 p. Barriga said that skins were smuggled into Arauca and flown to Tenerife, safer port until recently. Also flown thru from Barraguala. | We took colectivo for Villavicencio, about 2:30 p.m. Road worked out at edge, water high, + water too high for passage about 40 km. before Vc So we went rest of way by bus. Some still steep hillside covered with high wet forest, but most areas cleared and some burned. Villav. a fair sized town with heavy truck traffic. We arrived about 6 p.m. and went to Institute "Roberto Franco", animal library S. of town center. We found Dr. Federico Medem, germanic looking, heavy build. He had been in Colombia about 26 yrs., mostly at Villavicencio. The lab there now about dead, and expert for M., whose main interest is Crocodilians. (He has two papers on herpetofauna of Colombia, how - even.) (A jaguar skull at Univ. Bogota was labeled F. Medem, - 50ba? 7 Feb. 1954. Rio Guayabero, 7155. Measured 255 mm. long.) This animal was old and heavily infected w. dermatolias, said M. It had attacked a man cleaning fish in a canoe at shore, but had not killed him. F.M. said that jag. skins brought 2000 - = $125 2500 p. in 1968. Everyone hunts, many quitting other jobs to do so. Mostly shotguns & .22 rifles. One can get guns but need salvoconducto, license, various papers, & how to be renewed (every yr?). FM had a skin & skull of jaguar - Neda "El Juvenil", Bolivia. 071.83 m. Nov. 18/64. Skull 229.5 mm long. Not full!
