Also, E. foothills of Santander, lower Rio Magdalena valley (mostly in Bolivar- some mts. - much deforestation by colonists, for grazing lands) +, savannah area betw. R. Magd. & Sa. de Santa Marta, savannah area around Sucre (these savannahs also have L. forcata), reserve of Orinoquia at N end Casillero Occidental, middle coastal foothills to W. but population low there (JH says many species but low numbers this region). Orinoco throughout Colombia generally. Meraya & tigrinos absent from desert area of N. (Guajira) and adjacent regions. | Melanistic forms from Mosquera area, w. central Vargez, & upper Putumayo. Skin not considered valuable. | Altitude - 1968, a q taken at Fucha (sp.?); 2600m, North Cundinamarca . 1967 - 3200 m - apparent pair killed sheep over period 3 months (Loango y parano). Two months later, tracks about 20 km. North. Later, tracks about halfway between. Around all same (Bayona?), 2600 m. pair. | 1919 N of Bogota; pair killed, mounted in Museo del Valle (Bogota);- probably destroyed since. | Hunt. Use "alla" or "calabaza" to call; day day, six on coast, savannah Bolivar, Veraguas, Chiriqui. Sometimes come w/ dogs and kill w/ lanza, diving at throat near elbow, using detachable shaft (lanza). Often use "decoy" or small goat for bait, hunt at night w. light. Certain fresh magistercyptusum jaguar feeds on - hunters sure? Special Special "perra tigrice" used, imported. Nos taken - official data parted as much catriband, many poorly preserved; some absent w/o feet, others w/o ears. Some animals many cutaneous holes, which reduce price. Statistics may be 75% of actual take; possibly 4-5000/yr. taken. Control - many brought in thru Letecia (a free port until last January), only perhaps 30% from Colombia. Control "made" in B. & P., said JH. Useless to strengthen laws unless all 3 countries
