Panama, R.P.
in really quiet area from Hotel El Panama. He said about 50% of Panama still forested. He realized some efforts Bayano project on wildlife and had arranged with an animal protection organization (Scott? operates nearby near Cayenne?) to rescue animals displaced by water (GMH was going to make some animal surveys then and eventually have a certain island).
R.G. had a plan for big preserve in Darien near Colombia border (same law linked with after project), but not yet implemented. (N. Smith said that 500,000 hectares of Darien recently leased to Great Britain for development, presumably opening and grazing with no stipulation about final condition of land). R.D. (exert. Town in Africa to learn wildlife methods) was meant but probably had little influence.
//GMH - planning to keep monkeys in compound at army dumps near Rodman, several hundred acres. Dr.M.D. Young much interested in my monkey experience. Also some thought of island colonies.
GMH had many capuchins, spider m., and squirrel m., marmots and night monkeys in cages for disease work. The lab enjoys good cooperation with both Panama and U.S. military - facilities for guest workers (Larry Bowding (?) R.Baker student, has made 2-yr. study Residency).
C. Meredy says the Myrmecophaga is in forests in Panama diminishing as often shot killed by men.

Visited Neal G. Smith at Smithsonian Center on Roger Hospital and just S. of MARU. He said there are ocelote in C.Z.; two brown in the Rodman army dump area, which is fenced (C.Meredy also saw near Gamboa - to capybara also now on Gamboa). Dickles Smythe has been working on apate & capybara B.C. Island, using automatic photo traps at times. The institute has expanded and includes Pacific & Atlantic marine stations, island or pacific side bayard Ft. Amador. Good air conditioned offices at Balboa. Also saw greenhouse
