Berkeley to Panama
Drive from home to S.F. airport. Took 6 pm flight to H.A. Then 8:30 p.m. flight to
Panama on Aviance. Landing at Makis (City). Few passengers.
26 May 1972. Arrived Tocumen 6:30 a.m. Taxi to Sanger Memorial Lab in Bella
Vista. Confirmed with C. Mendez, O. Souza, M.D. Young (director), Carl Johnson,
Pedro Galindo. | GML has had field camps all over Panama. Occasion:

ally they have seen jaguars in Darien, high area near Colombian border.
Recently a man was returning to camp carrying a log of netted birds when
whooped
he saw a jaguar by path. Man attempted to frighten it and it came at

him. The man stumbled two and shouted for help. The jaguar stayed

Animal apparently fearful in that remote area. This story mostly by
Pedro Galindo, who was with party. He also said that a friend had cattle

/Galindo related one story where a jaguar killed several cattle, as if he
had gone crazy. Another time a jaguar entered corral and killed many
calves. Near Darien - Col. border, very wild still, and parties sleep,
see jaguar tracker and smell cat urine. Colombian drug stores

tent in field; he shot at it w/ shotgun. | Galindo told of seeing
me sitting on rock watching otters in stream - nonchalant - when
shot at, moved slowly away. | Once when hunting agouti at night,
saw a jaguar walk upstream in water. | An apparent
jaguar cave in rocks had 4 perrancy skulls near mouth.
Most droppings include hair of collared perrancy (P.G.). Think
perrancy the chief natural food. | Down to Near Chepo, a Darien
campground where dealer has caged animals for sale. Said to
average jaguar hunters too. | Most Indians have .22 rifle
