Mazatlan
Rode bus to Socolo Beach - 1 peso - dozens of hotels along shore.
Casa de Huéspedes, up side street next W. from Hotel Centro (80 p.).

Mazatlan
Visited Auler Bros. (fishing) shops. Mostly dead barracuda. No 6 wheel ATV. Rented galonjera ($11/day w/ins, + $6 /hr). At foot of 5 de Mayo, when join Clauncher (beach at Nodge town). Took 1000 pesos toward Durango, to La Ciudad (a pine plateau). Lower slopes mesquite, legume trees, big figs, semi-tropical garden & evergreen mixtures. First pines above Mesa de Carrizal - many at Capilla de Tapia, lunch stop at Sta. Rita, in pine grove, with large-leafed oak or mespilus. Doosy needle (= limber pines?). By Lobezos, 1422 km, a huge canyon to S., 90% pines (microwave station nearly atop ridge). Palmuto, 1684 km, had solder station, 2 restaurants (199 km. from Durango). Board border, madrones. Cliffs of columnar pinkish rocks. Road circled edge of huge barranca, splitting SW. Revolcederos, Los Angeles, El Indio (2 p.m.). La Fraguito (Barrancuero restaurant), El Medanos, El Diablo (2355 m.). About 4:00, climb in pass, excellent distant views to N & S (162 km from M). Could see Los Frailes, sun to SE of San Agustin. About 2:30, onto plateau pine mesa - then La Hermita (no ledge). Took Puente Buenos Aires, ! tino 1440, another fine N & S views. La Ciudad, 1453 - double turn. Got off, started walk to road. Light rain. Walked hitched ride to Pte. Buenos Aires. Filled up, after dark, & camped short of El Diablo. Light rains at night. Cool! Near La Hermita, roads said sometime ½ meter snow in winter, traffic stopped. Dried pears rare, no figs. But foxes, deer, bobcats. Many big trucks through at night.
