Felis onca 21 April 1972 Ft. Huachuca Ariz. Rosette smaller and stop further back on rock than in S. Am In Mayrit, spots especially close together. Ground color pale coast; darker in water (San Ignacio area). Dale has seen black jaguars; tho a hunter on Cristobal-Costa Rica border concentration area - said he had them never. Mayrit swamps - hunted from 1 to 1964, with no apparent decrease in jaguar. Had to cross mostly west in Tuxpan side (Paraiso (??) area). Visited about 1970 and found jaguar sign in mangrove passages. Bechton shows outboard boat used. Hunted "strijer" a small mangrove islet in Laguna Agua Brava. Last pair took 13 men who took 14 jaguars. Largest about 150 lb In mangroves, eat deer, turtles, catfish. At edge, take some cattle. Early trips, more ocelots than jaguars. Then prevented up to 500-750 pesos. Many taken with st trops. In 1964, more jaguars than ocelots. Water-jag. water animal. Once Dale in lake in boat about 2 a.m. on moonlight night and saw jaguar swimming close. (Later used new camp. Dogs trod it in morning; it trod men in circle. Dale figured cat had second lake; hunted there and got the cat). Colombia - hunted Rio Cauca near Medellin. Skin of one in Cuchira gantra a few miles toward Bird from Gu Visto. Venezuela - first hunted about 1952. Took 2 men mounted; 25 near Rio de Apure. Nearest concentration are found. Jags to 250 lbs. Llenor w. jaguar along rivers. D season. Cut passages through gallery forest for cars. New day day with 2 groups 12 dogs each. No horses used. Night calling had poor response. Jaguar killed cattle - many. U
