10 March 1972
Oaxaca -> Mexico City
Took 3 p.m. bus for Mexico. First four hours passed through
much-grilled, grazing land. Arrived about 1 a.m., stayed really tired.
11 March 1972. Saturday. Went to Hotel Desil, on Isabel Catelan. Local
sight-seeing in city.
12 March 1972. Sunday. Went to zoo at Chapultepec Park,
where saw group of muntjac deer, among wide variety. One
small jaguar cage (jaguar?). Then to Hotel Camino Real, site
of N.A.M. Wildlife Conf. | Pollini Baker told me that there were
some jaguars and ocelots in coastal region, centering at Tampico.
Area north to La Pesca in theory, protected; has ocelots, but all
area being turned to cropland north of Tampico. A ranch
at Acuña, north of Gonzlez, was owned by John Muehlen,
of Dallas. Jaguar killed or took cattle, but other game
protected. Good base for wildlife studies. He also mentioned
other men who might have information. Baker has had no personal
experience with jaguars or ocelots. | Arthur Greenhill said
that about 1932, at site of Madden Dam, Parras, there were
jaguars. One followed their along a trail and remained
sitting when he looked back; the cat walked away in his
own footprints. | Pollini Baker also said that from Cd. Valler
to Tampico, to N. of highway, thick forest which probably
includes jaguars. A man from Monterrey said that about
10 miles N. of Manuel, there was a hill where jaguar had
been seen (or taken?) i [Acuña area].
13 March 1972. Attended meeting of N.A. Wildlife Conference.
Talked with Juan Ojasti of Venezuela. For Univ. Helsinki.
