Journal 3 March 1972 Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, Mexico Founder of Brigham Young Univ. (Press), located near monument 5 of archeological museum. 5 American employed there. Apparent lion on + off, said they had worked in area for (7 yrs). Now working on court and in La Venta canyon (w. of Ocosnucte). Formerly there were yoguins, but none seen last several years. They thought hunting and deforest ation had decreased nos. One said stated price of yoguin 500 p. several years ago; now much higher. One of them, Pierre Aguirine of Belize, was apparently of family with ranch near Villaflora. These people not too friendly with the Casa Blanca group. 8 March 1972. Mined 0.500 lbs to Maldenes. Visited Don Miguel at 2pm again. They are increasing restaurant + museum space. Visited the Delgado of Fraust, but he knew almost nothing of yoguins or hunting, only that it was prohibited. He said enforcement poor because communication poor. (He had been in position here only a month ago. Francesco Ferreyra (They know at Public Market for books on local birds) New Ferreira (?). We took noon hour to Teonantique. Then again talked with Dr. T. Mac Dangall. He thought the area given to December might indicate preservation, as only 66 families involved, and no facilities for removing timber. But he feared that agriculture might still be of value to develop region and move more people in. Talked with Chris Martiney, who keeps some chiva locally. He said he was offered recently an occelot skin measuring 110 cm., but seller wanted peer 1500, which was price several years ago. Now, 60-70cm hide price about 100 p. (formerly, 100 cm. = 1500 p.). 1 m. = full grain. Chris said that recently he was offered 9 with swell cub, chiva, in for 300 pesos a large skin; said sold to local telegrapher. Don T. had once had a pet cub, brought for 30 pesos, said yrs. ago. Chris said any of yoguin skins near Santo Domingo Petapa, apparently in Mexico
