Journal 13 October 1971 Ajoya-San Ignacio, Sinaloa, Mexico en route many magpie jays (50+ in bunches to about 8) which came readily to squab's or game call. Also saw quail cuchos (Raja, brown) at edge bunch large tree, woodpecker, flycatcher and guen (?) flew over road, 12+ quail (balwhite ?) at edge field, black vultures, other birds. One lemur, gray, in tree 30' overcasto in shady area. Some higura (colobus) tree, with 6" green fruits. We were told they were canneros, mojara, trout, in river near Ajoya. Owls near San Ignacio 4 toads (B. varanus ? - huge pested) in plaza an evening. In late afternoon talked w. Ferreira again. He said there were groups of coatis (tejones) in some areas, large numbers blackboacas at tinier, feeding in three near Est. Pinar (NNW sta., 10 km, W. of present N-5 highway). / Bays brought in large jiro bobcat nearly which had been taken recently in traps. Barely alive, with rope around necks. Offered to sell it to me, when I declined, offered to give it. Slept on hill to N. 14 October 1971 San Ignacio-Mazatlan, Sinaloa Din of roosters, dogs, church bells in town. We crossed river and took 8 a.m. bus to Mazatlan (10 p. o'd). Looked around town. On spit where fishing boats leave, 2 sailfish and several dolphins hanging at rental store; men look to W., 100+ dolphin carcasses, dissected after fillets cut. Much sewage stunk & litter this area. The Ferry to St. La Paz takes 17 hrs., leaves 5 p.m., fares are low as $5.20 (US). Fair central market of one block, 30 p. for 2 at cheap
