Journal 5 March 1972 Riso de Oro, Oaxaca, Mexico of Cero Bowl north (300 Brahmas) now cut away, savannah, with little wildlife, and therefore had to go in deeper. But now armed menaces and border + landmaking disputes, so undesirable. | On this house he had skin of ocelot and jaguar. | He said latter called 'petatillo,' meaning lots of small spots, characteristic of this. Driven away (5-10 slopes). When stated ranch, 17 yrs. ago, puma and tiger left; old stock, but no tigers killed 5-6 tigers. Now seen last 2-3 years. Tiger found the palm thicket, when favorite food was white-lipped peccary (sues). Puma could not handle the large animal; puma took smaller livestock, tiger larger. Ocelot very shy, nocturnal; preyed on hares and turkeys. Favorite food is red-legged jaguar. Everyone hates. Black cheechee's gav. | Said Bonny lolly (sp.?); walked for Bowley; quit in disapproval. | Monkeys now few in - only spider monkey (good eating). People shoot 7-8, sometimes several, to get young to sell. There are some local pros. occasional hunters. | Ocelot took home from one man. So he borrowed 2 dogs, tried ocelot. They threw stones at it; jumped from tree to tree. Finally, a pink branch broke, ocelot fell, fought dogs, shot. Skin, large, brought 300 pesos. Large outlets may take magana, but not javali. | He thought jaguar much less agile than puma, cattle on ground or in trees. Puma faster. | Jaguar kills by taking two leaps, about 5 yds., landing on back, biting neck. They learn on seeing one do it, daytime. Smell of tiger's favorite livestock. | Menini were friendly; said glad to help me get into forest near ranch, but condition too unsettled now. We delivered photo prints sent by Don't. -note Mac D., taken on ranch by Orin Howard about 3 yrs. ago. | Hatched
