also Baul, and Panning had seen them in E. Oaxaca. Also, he said that
the call of black chachalacs were misinterpreted, probably referring to another
kind of chachalac. In captivity at zoo, total call not heard. Part resembles
bd. called "rompe genero" locally
tearing piece of cloth. Part sounds like the fluttering wooden rito,
voice - mules - not like Ortelia. ) Apparently Stuart Bowley, came
with students from Wash. State Un., Barford of Cal. Acad., and others
had stayed at Cero Basil ranch (of Carlos Menini) in years past.
Menini live at Pajz de Oro; can't reach, 40 km in. Not friendly with
the Rudolfo Sanchez - Morony lumber outfit, lived about 1 km. S. of Los
Cruces below Centlopa. Don T. suggested I now write Dr Emiliano there,
then get truck ride to Sanwill about 40 km. in, talk to organica.
and get other truck riders in, leads to near Menini Ranch. Not supposed
to cut in Chisp Oaxaca, but apparently doing into, as noticed today.
/ Chantel area in cloud forest west of Tehuatepec; Juan Panning knew
it well (good collecting site?). ) We hoped to meet skin doctor Chris
Ortega, but he was not back from Chilubna by mid-afternoon.
We took 6:30 p.m. bus to Tapavotepe and camped.
5 March 1972. Sunday. Took local bus about 0730 to Pajz de
Oro, at Oaxaca. Chisp live. Name of Carlos Menini (German painter)
almost 200 yrs. before border castle. We found Menini, about 70 yrs.
tall, with dead left leg, at home. He was full of tales about bird
experience with visitors, including scientists, who shot wildlife,
including Trogan, Tropic. Said Bowley shot 4 of "saturny eagle"
pain. Another was hunter to sell skins of birds. We said one
