La Concepcion, S. Chiares, Mexico
Tigers come out of woods, go to drink near boat landing, and walk
to A.del T.
Jock. Also, that Don Miguel had twice seen a cub last November,
at Tchite; I think (check w. Ma. del T.). If Pancho said another
seen one behind house. He had been here 2 yrs. Said they
had never heard jaguar roar. | We started to row to La Concepcion, &
supposedly 1 1/2 hrs. Lost a tow at Cuencajide, & went rest of the
way. Then, house of large family ("children") near river water,
and about 30 people gathered, apparently to have sort of a
goodby party for slain arrow. The widow told me all about it...
when the machete cuts were, etc Unknown who did it. | On
way out saw pair of black lambs, opossums, armadillo, a
chachalaca flew across 100yds of water, parakeet, mirracoa
(magic joy), black mitimer, a tigris kitten, blue heron,
frogate dove. | With Pancho and local man, we walked thru
woods at edge mangroves around west of the creek, about
2 hrs. Central area largely tall grass. Many palms. Our
guide said no monkeys, but deer, armadillos, porcoos, etc.-
no javeli, a gallivison bird larger than chachalaca.
Small ponds had turtle; saw old shells. Many garvoro
(lig ej carver), some a meter long. Saw one boarish, under
spiny wild-pineapple. Took two Andes, an America, & smaller
lizard (spars.). Guide said two tigers killed recently, one
large 5', one smaller 2' (not pregnant), one about 20
days ago (the Dr. said 25 days). Skin sold; large as
at 1300 pesos. Bones thrown away, including skulls.
Tiger pained by dogs, shot w. 16 ga. shotgun. Saw a guy
