26 February 1972 S. Chiapas, MEXICO
squirrel in tree. Merganser huge - junction of stultus often 10' or more up, some stultus 12" diameter. Tree green, but ground covered w. dry leaves. We saw no sure sign of cats - no specimen, lower, food remains, good tracks. / Near shack at Tubuti, a group of 10- accipiters Delinicta (?) late on trunk of partly-fallen tree, about 12' up. Knocked one down for specimen salamancuesa. Pardo caught a small shrike (specimen) in limb of rotting down palm trunk. He said often in lower pulled-off branch of palm branches. We also saw Andio (?), but took none. He told of a large "salamandra" in area. Pardo took a small lizard (14) in patio of house. / Last evening, saw large reddish bats flying singly over esteros - probably Noctilu's leporinus bats. Also saw other bats flying near shed & houses. / Ground cover of dry leaves makes silent walking, or tracking, difficult. / Put up an 19' bat net alongist shed. Took 2 single small phyllostomus evening, another kind (pale head; no rtipes) by morning. / Found a chick of chocholotes, about 2 days old, in forest. /
-27 February 1972.- In late afternoon,
paddled to La Quemijado, a path where could walk 4 4 miles to Seashore. Two families in stick houses, w. many dirty and some naked children. Boys & Sra. Hernandez fished w. barline in surf, using Cuento drift, and took after about 4 cabina (12-16"), 10 croaker, & two catfish.. / At one house, 4 chicks of chocholotes, a few days old; said hatched them under hen.
