22 February 1972 Tikal to C. Guatemala, Guatemala
paved w. moto and minivan, person truck and cat (horse?)
track in wet ground. | Walked 4c km. uproad to Uayactun - then
forest, little modified at sides - good bird & mammal searching
track, I think. | Departed by plane at 3 p.m. Passed for 1/2 hr.
on nearly solid forests, E. and S. of Tikal. Big lake far to E.
Then a few small blue lakes, more openings & cultivation, large lake,
and E.-W road (to Belize?). Then very large lake close to W. San
Carlos, but nearly clear at B. City. | To hotel Florida again.
23 February 1972. Ave reunited J. Van Kirk, while I went to
Instit. Geografico (zone 13, near Reforma and Calle 4). Bought map
of land use in Peten ($1). Then talked w. Luis Fernete, geografo, in

He gave me 1:250 000 map (4 sheets) of forest type. Showed me
USFWS maps of fauna (based on Sanders, 1946) and of ecological zones
(narrow broad); there to be published with 60+ others, in June.
He repeated that Guatemala welcomes investigator and offers coop-
eration. | Went to office of DIGESA, located in zoo grounds, to
try to get copies some maps. Talked w. Mari's Acuesta and his boss.
Could have maps - in fact, an ecological set, about 3' square, tomorrow
morning. I begged off & said I would wait for printed set. Their
gp. did not work in field but compiled results. They were only
come to have maps checked in field, especially in view of
changes caused by agriculture (as on S. coast). | Brief visit
with Van Kirk. He thought he could attract jogueros with fuel boat
to photograph them. Said his behavior good for hunting because of
