Bradypus griseus
July 10, 1956 B.C. Island, Carol Zone
Eugene Oermann called my attention to one in top of
tall Bombosoprin 50 yards E. of Old Sol. Wilma
said it was there about a week ago.
July 12, 1956. About 6 pm one dropped out of Ccep-
in tree 100' W. of Kitchen. Wilman thought it was one
he had photos in captivity & released about 6 weeks
ago. He thought it originally from BC Island. I cut off
posterior right front toe (of 3) & painted left side of
body white (enamel). Boconaga hung it back in same
tree. When held & arm pulled, sloth pulled claws back
against forearm & brought foot forward as if to scratch.
July 18, 1956. About 6 p.m. saw same one near
top of smaller Cecropia 100' NE of first. Paint + missing claw
visible. It hung by hind feet & scratched at head with alt.
alternate strokes of foreclaws, keeping this up for several
minutes at least. At 7:20 p.m. Also it was on a branch
in top of same tree. Hawler nearby 50 yds. from it, moving
in trees but not calling.
July 19, 1956. Sloth gone from these two trees.
July 31, 1956. Painted sloth said to have been seen in Cecropia 100' N. Kitchen
yesterday, & another in Cecropia 100' NW of Kodak House.
August 1, 1956. Saw the one near Kodak House about 6 p.m., & again
about 8 p.m. Red eye shine, but small dull eyes. Responded to whistle
by turning head. Much green algae on this one. At 8 a.m., in same tree,
10' distant, hanging by one arm a foot.
Aug. 7, 1956 CW Bettman saw adult & small baby at
Baldwin Lathrop 1.7 about Aug.5. Wilman had baby from Panama & had.
