Kibale Forest, Hnia Block
5 November 1965. Mr. Rutherford showed me Eucalyptus seligra (sp.?)
grove 3^1/2 yrs' old, trees 8' apart, adjacent to edge forest (Hnia block
N. of F.T.P.-Kampala Rd.), where colobus said to strip bark & kill
trees. Trees 5-6" diam, ^25'-35'tall. Damaged for 7 rows back
from edge. Dry branches all broken from bole. Basal bark
gauges lost + some short strips bark torn off. More torn
off in short (reel-like) sections all up trunk and top 6-6' dead &
branchless. R. said there largest tree attacked. In other area trees
badly damaged were cut, & then sprouts from stumps. Big
forest trees to 70' nearly touching eucalypts at edge. We saw 2
C. alps. nearby, thot not in eucalypt. Two trees wired for
firewood for the factory. Along road to highway saw one juv 3
