4 October 1965 Toro Game Preserv. Toru Uganda
grs. 300 yds. S.; other grs. of 2 and 3 at. Moved further S. to watch. Saw
in dead tree grs. of 8 (1a jnr.-1) + inf. (prob. complete grs.), sitting,
lying, grooming; at least 1 ad. M, prob. 2. | Heard the rattling call &
than another one from 1/4 mile distant: then both - could be territ-
orial warning, the males show no excitement at it. | Bunch of
Papio to 150 yds. from, in tree, 4 occes. barks. | The 8 bunches in
20' diam. in same tree. a rattle (C. mit.) within 50 yds. | 10:25,
another grs., 1/2 mi. S. lodge, 7 or t, feeding in the foliage in center
river forest band. Muggy, warm; alto cumulus clouds, but no
rain morning. | 1500, returned to area S. of lodge & searched river]
5 October 1965. 7 a.m., 8+ in tree A', 200 yds. SSE of camp, incl. 2
jnr. + 1 inf. (saw them last eve too). And in top of big round topped tree
at B (500yds. S. camp), 5, only the tails showing, all in an even line
as if on one limb (1 jnr.). Last eve also 2 at in treetop C.
at
side tree for monkeys. Saw grs. of. 4 (jnr: 1), 5, 9 (2 jnrs), 8 (3
jnr. mips.), 9 - the 9+8 about 200' apart, possibly same grs.,
about 1/2 mile S. of lodge. The 9+5 about 300 yds. apart. Good
visibility after showers. Black & white hornbills often on treetops
& at first taken for monkeys. Fish eagle flew slowly over stream.
5 October 1965. | Overcast & threatening, but only a few drops.
0900, area S. of lodge surveying treetops N to S. About .2 mi. S. lodge,
to W., 5 (2-3 jnrs. played wrestled, dangled from limb wrestling, until
dropped into foliage), 5 + jnr 1, 3,6,3,β, 7 - all there in about .4
mi. distance along river. Moved to .5 S. of lodge, where grs. 9+
8 last eve; none in same tree, but 100 yds. N. in dead tree counted 11,
apparently no inf.s & perhaps no small jnrs. a grs. of 4 at 500'
