Koford Nasua nasica September 16, 1956 Barro Colorado Isl., Canal Zone. The family of 7 young coatis look up at kitchen. Red paint (Testor's dope) gone from foreb'd one, but clipped fur evident. Enclosure left open 7 days ago. October 14, 1956. Sue R. says she saw a small young near kitchen. Several half-grown seen there about a week ago. One adult has injured left hind foot & holds it well above ground always. Trapped this one in Nat'l T. Co. trap. Weighed 11 lbs., or. Slit ear, other already slit. Cut off outer toe R Front foot. Anesthetized for 4 min. with ether in 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 ft. cax. It was 6 minutes out of caw before it could stand; walked 4 min. later. Painted L side black orange. This one has slit cut near right nostril & holds L H leg up when walker. Teeth indicates old. Testor scratched, Drag on sides. Recovering from blow other, one of first acts was to lick tail. / Trapped another or, testor scratched, darker color. Weighed 11 1/2 lbs. One ear already slit. Escaped in handling. Some odor to this one in trap. No parasites or molt apparent on either animal. October 23/1956. The orange one still hanging around kitchen [#10 toe off]. Oct. 21 we see three with deep slash to bone across back; cut 4" long & open but did not seem to hinder animal much. One climbed live tree within an hour after & being a hummingbird feeder there & turned it over. Several times a feeder found on ground recently, often with branch broken - apparently coati work.
