Alovatla palliata 16 January 1957 Barro Colorado Is, C.Z. A group of about 10 passed along edge clearing below Allen House in afternoon, string out 100+ yds. 19 January 1957 Saw one of 20' swashed near Tower. No others found. 2 February 1957 Robert Evers saw a small young clinging to adult in transit near SM 1. 16 February 1957 Near AVA 3 I saw at least 8, at least 2 being juveniles, in large tall fig tree. One juv. very small, perhaps 1/5 size adult; other about 1/3 grown. Mr. P. Hawes reported a clan with a small young near Miller 10. 5 March 1957 Near BL 4 saw 10 including a tiny "dole in arms" clinging to side of mother, all silent and high in crown of tree; Morning chorus about 5:45 a.m. still. On 3 March I saw 5 in top of Paulownia Fendleri near SM 1 1/2. Eating small tufts of new leaves or bases of same, & throwing them down. I took several photos of these (2 1/4 x 2 1/4, Graflex 12 1/2" lens). 9 March 1957 A group of about 50 scouts & parents were stationed along about 11 miles of trails to count monkeys 7:30 to 10 a.m. Each pair had sector 700 to 1100 meters long. Results of counts rather poor, a total of 28 howlers and 41 Cebus being reported. Largest group of howlers 5, and often 1, so evidently many members of groups missed. Some inexperienced and may never have seen a monkey in the wild! Method could work with preliminary training of people & familiarity at trails and monkeys. Putting best bilers on trails most distant from Dole introduces error. Many jumped at trail ends so as to be on the job early.
