Macaca mulatta
fascicularis
7 August 1965
Nr. Dehra Dun, U.P., India
When several run, as in alarm, stay on ground, & sound
on leaves like start of heavy rain shower. Few call;
one imm. on ground gave locator grunt; & sev'd nearby
did same then. // Compared to Cays Bartoj's, quiet, witnessed,
repeated from neighbors. // We visited group 30+ in grounds
of Forest Institute. At least 8 infants; no old f w/o inf, but
one about 4 yrs. w/o. | all alert & molting, no crown
only; some with long gray hair only lateral thorax. 3 ad.
0707 seen; one w. tail prominently up, not longer for protrusive
& tail co. curled to one side; apparently #1. One nr. hole in
R. cheek pouch obviously much lower in rank. About
1/4 mile from other a single ad., prob. 07. | Leidlbrugmay
make some social behaviour studies on this group. Rep skin
very red on 1 old f, mod. red on sev'd; male mod.red. Male
#2 sat close over ad. & in tree; only consats? Then at edge large
block of pines with 10-15' under
story, thick; probably
largely dependent on feeding by people.
8 August 1965. In 3 hours in forest area detailed more,
those saw group of langurs. Population density apparently low.
Large dung beetle roll away dung balls soon after
monkeys pass. Some eating fresh new distal part of shrub;
so some monsoon affect on nutrition.
