Macaca fuscata 8 June 1966 Kinkazan, Miyagi-Ken only 3 ad ff and 1 inf, so not the whole large group, and no yearlings. I judged ages & sexes: 1 inf, 1-2 yr., 2-4 yr. ? (but not reddened), 1 old ? (molting crown), 1 ad ? (w. bloody L elbow, left forefoot up in running - one of the 4 yr ?? was with him, & these were last in order); +3 ff (only 1 w. infant). (Allowing for 6 more mins. + 3 ff, still = only 10 total in a gp.). The ? w. inf. followed by 2 yr old. / Molt. A 4-yr. ? small tester, had an anterior 3 cm. crown melted. Ad. ?, molt continued to rope in medial hand. (25x telescope). / The animals walked across slope to ridge. ? w. inf. ascended 3 m. Symplocos tree and ate leaves in successive handful grabs. (Collected some for analysis). While below him on ground, in open Merianthus area, an ad. ? ate from a Berberis bush (1515). 1530, mr. same tree on ridge or ? (4 yr? - barely pink butt) pulled down branches Berberis bush (mod. spiny) and ate from, serv'd xx. I went to the tree, and across the valley to NW, stop W. ridge, I saw 1 reaching up, standing on hindlegs, & eating from Berberis bush. (Later visited site, but did not reloat gp.) 8 June 1966. 0630 at Colin Pass. Walked down to E., N. cross country to trail to summit, up to area Heaven Pillar and summit. Heard none, & saw no droppings - in more open areas to W. at this season? (May?) Much Ganthoxylon here, but little Symplocos - too damp & shady?). 0840, left summit and walked out S. Ridge (to above Dansho Pass), where some droppings (same as yesterday?). Heard none. Returned to area Forest Colin.
