28 May 1966.
Koshima, Miyazaki-Ken
pregnancy (but 2 or more of these have clear molt crown).
Yoshida said in winter use 6-7 kg. food per animal per
month (sweet potato?). Seem less as abundant
natural food. May, eat berries, fruits, new leaves.
Vegetation - trees & shrubs about 1/2 evergreens, Y. says.
About 12 species dominant. He has plant list and
observations on phenology. He also says birth season
a little early. Also that Takasabeyama season more
compact as numbers increase (or at Days S.).!
Bonnet macaques - 1 gp. + 2/3 another brought from
India to JMC. First part in enclosure, other in large
cage. In wild most info. Aug to Feb. (births), but
a peak rather than distinct season; the peak varying
with locality. They plan to put bonnets on an island.!
Occasionally we cross to mainland. About 6 yrs. ago one
or did, then about 5 yrs. later returned just before mating
season, participated in mating, & departed again. 1 of
7 low lost year, 5 survive.
to Tojimisaki
29 May 1966 Rain + wind nights to nearly noon, 1050, left
for Tojimasaki with Fureya. Many Cays in canyon
m.m. monkey feeding area, near ocean. Feeding at foot of
a mod. steep wooded canyon. Saw no monkeys, but fresh
droppings. The keeper, Kosho Yoshida', there about 10 yrs.
and says May 21 earliest birth he remembers. This year
first May 24, and 4 born to date. Says usually all
born by (mid ?) July - short season?. He said about
250 monkeys, now tending to split troops. 6 p. at
feed area last eve, & usually comes down when sees him.
He put wheat many spots on ground by 1300, but
no monkeys yet. | Vegetation thick & green, with high
