Macaque fuscata
27 May 1966 Kyoto, Japan
about 21♂♀, 18 born in April. Wild troop earlier than
provisioned! (I think Lindburg found wild troop
nr. Debra Den earlier than a forest dept. grounds
gr. in 1966.) Does more abundant food = later mating?
Another man recently returned from Takahashi, report-
ed 13 inf's. found thus to May 26. } Kawai,
incidentally, now recording molt, and agree
that it is earlier when cooler birth season is
early, as at Shodoshima (vs. Kosheina).
28 May 1966. By boat to Kosheina, Miyazaki-ken,
with Yoshiba and Fuenya. High, densely green
vegetation of shrubs and trees, shore lived us. low
sandstone cliffs. One fisherman, wife, & dog live on
the island. Minimum water barrier about 200 meters
or mainland side. Said to be many raccoons on
island. Animals poorly fed up to 2 years ago and
probably stunted. Until then, seldom had normal sex
behavior (?) until 6 yrs. old, but now start at 3½.
Usually first birth at 5 yrs. (Yoshiba). Fertility also
low, as only 7 born to 20 ad.♂♀ last year. Y. also
said ♂♂ 1, 2, 3 did little actual mating, but 142 espec-
ially after ♂♂ sat by ♀ and masturbated to ejacul-
ation. Solitary ♂♂ (7) did most of the mating.
Composition: total 59. 22 ad. ♂♂ (5 yrs. at), 20 ad. ♀♀
(14 yrs, 1-5, rest 6 at+), 1 inf. (born May 12 to low
ranking ♀ which had no inf last yr. or 2), and 16
inims. (+5 yrs., 5 yearlings, but no 2-yrs olds. - a
typhoon in Sept. of 1964 kept everyone from island
for many days, and all adults survived but no
infants survived. ) Seel ♂♀ now in advanced
