Kinkazan Is., Miyagi-ken,
in beech, oak, camphor, rhododendron area. At a flat spot
near road I found 50+ droppings, as if favorite spot. Again I
heard calls to S. & upslope, went slowly toward, saw none. To
top ridge to N. of telephone line crossing, + then heard calls on slope
to E., as if animal had crossed. Self thought that in all he had
seen at least 10 vids. this afternoon. Calls heard at 1770, when we
started back N. on ridgetops. Rhododendrons now in full bloom.
18 May 1966. Clear, light breeze. About 0630 left Colin, + to Sore.
Self went S. along ridge, I to N. I to summit 0745, then set N.
Ridge, turned back 0900, summit 0950, + back S via Hara Pillar +
Colin Pass to Colin. Self had gone out + back S. ridge twice, + heard +
saw none. I saw none either. (We did not even Shohuyoku sanja.)
About 1130 from Colin cut telephone line to S. for 45 min.; but detected
none. / Apparent new monkey feeding on back Calliopsa near stream
above Colin; loudache. photos.
