16 April 1966. Kinkazan, Miyagi-ken, Japan
that area. T. said he saw monkeys S. of Sansho Pass (above line) on
S.E. slopes once. / About 1330 from S. Ridge about 500 m. S. of E. Cabin
Trail, I saw one large dark appeared in Fagus open forest, studying N.
Shortly I saw one in right draw to N. Azuma said he saw 4, but go-
ing N. We went to E. Cabin trail area but saw no more. I to see Heaven
Pillar, summit, + N. Ridge but saw no more. Col. fought at the gp.
17 April 1966. I left shrine 0640 & went via summit to Heaven
Pillar & down trail to E. Shock, then up (W. on) E. Cabin Trail, but
saw none. Later along S. Ridge + both N. or W. side - saw none. Back
at Shrine at 1310. Tenoda + Azuma had gone out that time but
had found no monkeys. / Droppings - in an angle of granite
blocks, flat dirt floor, protected, facing S. across a draw about
1/2 km. S. of Cabin Pass, 100+, as if monkeys often rested there. One
small but old site in another pocket, completely overhung
about 50cm. up, same slope. Evidently gp. uses Fagus - Abies
250-300
slopes 300-400 meters up on WSW slopes.
Kaizaki
22 April 1966 Kaizaki Canyon, Shimokita-gun, Aomori-ken, Japan.
Arrived about 1 p.m. Azuma said Z warm and much plant growth
that day - Fagus crenata buds bursting, folis increasing in height.
Deciduous forest had given leafless appearance, tho ground fernish
Ferns
with folis to 20 cm. high. (Pteridium?) C to 10 cm. in clusters.
C (lot buds 1 cm) (tunmed)
Aralia and Kalopanax buds to 6 cm. Acer mans buds tiny &
clogeted (green velvety tip) about 100 % at foot canyon near stream.
Prinus grqgana most broad shrub in canyon; leaves to 6 cm.
Fagus crenata - some erective w. buds closed, buds 2 cm.; other w.
deswn to 3 cm. long, especially on high branches, on S. slopes. N.
