Koford 15 Macaca fuscata 6 April 1966 Kikazon, Miyagi-Ken, Japan another ing top of fallen log. (Another ad ♂ was 200m. N. of them). /1040, ad ♂ + gray & mv. bottom (400 yds E. of pass), while 3 at were 200m. upslope to S. of them. (Some mout. prol. due alarm) ♂ walk- eds lowly upslope, & 2 m. behind, another ♂ 100 m. behind three. 1115, I walked SE over sidehill ridge & saw ad.♀ (6 yr.) and an ad.♂. 1130, ♀ (6 yr.) ascended leafless tree slowy, on a ridge. Little feeling. Shortly I saw an ad ♂ in the same area. I cautiously approached - when I reached ridge, ♂ was on right ridge to SW, & 200 m. down canyon an adult ♀ on a slanting trunk gave alarm call every 5+ secs. (Onga, about A above mid-C). Red feed; no yrl. with, but 2 mins. saw 5. from area. / Composition estimated: 3 ad.♂ (1 a red), 3 ad.♀ (big brown ⏺gray, gray w. inf.; younger one - probably 1 or 2 more obs.), 3 mims. (2-3 yrs; one w. slight crest); 3 yearlings. / 1210, I left Teroa to follow & study gps. 15 April 1966. Returned w. S. Aizuma. Terao think 2 groups of 30+. (See Journal). We went to Forest Cabin, E. over ridge, then N. past Neon Pillar (1420) to summit, up N. ridge to Mountain Shrine, back to main temple 1605. Stayed at shrine for night. / A young man, Shuntaro Murayama, visiting island to start study of effects deer on forest, but seemed to know nothing of usual observation & game mgmt. methods - looking for damage by deer to trees, apparently. Journal Info. 16 April 1966. Rain to 11 a.m. We hiked area to W. of S. ridge, where Teroa recently saw large group, but we found none. Saw 2 woodcutters & asses. filled dressed (?)
