Macaca fuscata
Kinkazan Isl, Miyagi Pref, Japan
(shrine (highest den, S of trail)
23 March 1966.
sign. At 11:30, nearing coast E of shrine I saw 1 ad in tree (near where saw
in Feb.). Then upon reaching ridge alarmed a group of 10± in bush
trees just E of crest; these ran to ground and off over ridge to N. One sat
on ridge looking toward us (150 yds.). He followed them and again
saw gp, but they alarmed and ran N again, well below + to E
N-5
of ridge. We marked but did not find again. Walked S of summit,
then E to coast + S to lighthouse; later took same way to forest
dept shed. Saw more. Is there another group, or only the one
of 10-20? What happened to 60-70 reported by Ogawa in 1963? No proof.
24 March 1966. Walked first home to ridge + N, searching slopes for
monkeys, but saw none. Back to S + partly down ridge E of summit;
thus I saw apparent monkey droppings, perhaps 1 mo old, atop boulders
of granite outcrop. At 0830, soon after leaving shrine, I saw on
ridge to N of pool 2 adult >7?, apparently solitaries which came to
shrine area, in nosher + grass. If gp is only 17, maybe only 7-5 ad ??,
hardly enough to justify much effort here. Monkeys not easy to see,
however, as gray color similar to boulders + tree limbs, + usually
on ground rather than in trees. Spring not so severe as I thought
it would be - perhaps plant phenology behind Shinohata.
4 April 1966. M. Terada had been here about Mar 26 to Apr 1
and had seen troop 30 or + in canyon SE of summit, + had found
troop seal timer (see his notes). Today he accompanied me, + he
will spend most of April on Kinkazan. About noon he saw
3 ads about 1/2 way between shrine + hotel, when walking trail;
we thought these "solitary" males. We walked over grass to
E of Forest Cabin and down to forest valley SE of summit, but
