7 March 1966
Kaizaki canyon, Shimokita-gun, Japan
Windy & about 0°c midday. To Kaizaki feeder 1000; no monkeys.
Ascended west ridge to W. & saw sail on rocks, just to lee of
top, for about 1 hr. (distant photos). To makeup & found them
home in trees. Some ate one lived after another (Cormer?). (Photos)
her, kodokoma & bw.). About 2:30 p.m. gp. descended toward
canyon bottom & went to feeding area. Mutsu slapped my
leg occasionally as he charges. When I looked down into reflector
finder he usually ceased threats -> me. Threw food in trap
cage (Azuma said that more would enter last fall) and one
entered within 1 minute; soon 3 inside (3'x5'x12' cage traps). On
ridge branch Omongolia w. bark eaten, but teeth seem too small for,
monkeys'.
w/ S.Azuma. Warmer. No precip. Some sunshine.
8 March 1966. Arrived feeding area 1030; group already present.

Much feeding on vine in trees W. of food shed. 1013, 1 flower starting
(Azuma could not find tree nos. 4,5, & 9!). Apparently all 21
we departed 3 p.m.)
present; Azuma explained recognition marks & age estimates.
9 March 1966 Windy. Dep. at feeder 10 a.m. when I put out food. None
there when I returned at 3 p.m.
10 March 1966. Calm morning early. 0915, none at feeder but food
put 1500 yesterday gave. We hired boat & Azuma & I went N. up
coast about 0940 to 1030, searching shore & slopes for monkeys,
but found none. To yellow cliff area, past where say. said Azuma
say.
gp. reported seeing gp. Stream & falls areas city. / Back at feeder 1430.
Group came, but not Mutsu. Matsu ate wheat long, grain
dry grain. At 2 sites 3-4 yr. & groomed yearling (sib?).
deported I departed 1515. Wind & rain evening.
11 March 1966. Trace snow night; windy. Azuma to fdr. 0930.
