Macaca fuscata 24 Feb. 1966 Kinkazan, Miyagi, Japan Cold (m.0°C.); few clouds; mod. wind. Left shrine area 12:45, walked to forest dept. but. Many Juglans nuts on ground, buds of Castanea, buds of Fagus. Alnus has attacked reddish catkins & strobiles. W ascended main ridge after shifting SW side trail small over, returning a low to forest dept. Saw no monkeys, tho possibly heard 500 m. SE summitance. Conifers green; moss on ground green, & rare clump short bamboo. Rhododendron (?) bush had + mmn. tiny green leaves a shoot (1-2') bud w. red tips common on slopes & evidently now cropped by the deer. ) Fort patrolman here 1 month said saw male, only once - 10 few near his hut but he seldom to E. side ridge. 25 Feb. 1966. Wanner; ci-stilne; no wind: about 10 am walked up canyon behind (E. of) main shrine > ridge & at 10:45 saw 2 monkeys on ground about 100 yds. W. of fence (a ridge), appar. od. 9 + 7 yr. 9. They 50 yds. apart. Moved slowly. Pecked in leaves & pushed leaves down as if searching for food. Heard monkey screams 100 yds. NE of them from saw 2 mac on ground, 75 yds. apart. Walked slowly; pecked in leaves under thick w. pears. Then saw cat fence. One stood on hindlegs to look at us. One atop 5' fence (ripe). A crow on fence flew at a walking monkey to 2', turned quickly away. Ayawa said he glimpsed an "infant," & saw 07 w. food limping heavily (Ralf also saw it.) I saw apparent Oest. 4 yrs., & est. 3 yrs. Two crows flew at one; we looked closely making so if to get food unsecured, & monkey hurried away. The monkeys in the gp.; Ayawa thought all 07-07 - one larger than other. One of smaller mounted the other; repeated - and saw scot twins more in (10 min, perhaps not always both, same 2.
