Macaque fuscata

1 July 1965.
Koshima, Kyushu, Japan
Ko
K. Yoshida says monkeys on Shodoshima breed early, & also
two groups transplanted from them to N. & E.; indicates same genetic
basis? - or carry over of early cycles, which might get later in time.
Koshima - 18 mature ff; 3 born so far. First birth to highest ranked f.
(no yrings, so all info. died last yr. (log ? killed); only one baby found).
Cooler this summer than usual. Once a monkey, ad.07, to wander
it returned
opposite; 4 yrs. later back to island. Largest ff about 12 log. (weigh
d by fishing a scale). Stunted - some ad. ff have pelvis permanently
slanted down posteriorly; 2 yr. olds only about 6 lbs. Fed by scattering
grain (+ other) on ground, where males eat sand as well. Gave a barley
+ pea mixture today; much crunching & not greatly relished. On island
about 1:30 p.m., & soon 17 monkeys near me, very tame + slow.
Long legged & slow moving compared to C.S. shrews. Hair darker &
shorter than at Shimolita. But stage molt similar - many with
medial anterior crown molted. One said to be 6 yrs. old lost at 10 to
12 lbs. Breed season similar to Takasaki, perhaps slightly later,
tho T. anamala have better nutrition. Some molted forearms &
scapular area too. Saw me eat yellow soil 10' above sea level.
Y. said at Takasaki eat soil in 2 places + like certain rocks!
2 July 1965.
Takasaki, Yamag
At Takasaki about 5:20 p.m. Dirty run down appearance; a few monkeys
nearby to R.R. trail on road. Yoshida said now 3 bands of about 42 -
180-720. Last gp. formed 1963. Last good census & 2 (marked w.
point). Info. now larger than at Koshima. Some ad. ff. molting
of smallest gp
crown, as at K. about 50 feeding; Y. said there peripheral members; park
closed for day.
