Koford 51 Journal '4 +3 May 1966 Kinkazan Is, Miyagi-ken, Japan. Collected plant spec. Heard cuckoo grouse (?) hooting; saw flycatcher - new variety small birds than before. Frog voice common in stream (fresh water eels due too). Unsuccessful thresher in trapping moles (2 traps only). Back to Sendai. 16th: 0630 Colin Pass, -> summit -> Mt. Shinie 0820 -> summit 0850 -> Hozan pillar 0945 -> Colin Pass 1130 -> dock 1330. / Chris station; 10 lit NE wind. 17 May 1966 To Kinkazan With Ko Ogasawara and Dr. Yoshida, to Kinkazan. Dr. Yoshida helped identify plants. They returned to Sendai. Left + I stayed overnight (S of Colin Pass). Found seal markings area of S ridge, espec. W side near top. 18 '98 May 1966 Left Kinkazan 1400; returned to Sendai. / Deer - I saw one gop. on S ridge main peak with 3 faked horns (head), 1 10 cm spike, 3 deer (at least 1 seq.), 1 yearling = 8. Doe meant me gave "deja" call, opening mouth, & took high slow steps -> me, repeating whistly call. Another plain saw faked horn + doe. Mr. Noshiyama saw buck in velvet, w. 10 cm. antlers. The fat one sitting on hotel lawn also in velvet, w. fakes, antlers to 20 cm. As well fed ones in velvet; wild w. had old antlers. Deer food - heavily browsed is Rhododendron haempferi, V. erosa var. leucotae & gantophylion not browsed appearance. Stunted Fagus, some w. browse, some still dead, to 30 cm. tall on N ridge in Leucothoe. / at one site in coniferous woods (10 m tree) saw 8 crows, some on ground, fairly tame (open. to 10 m.) bear? 23 May 1966. Train Sendai to Tokyo. Office work. 25 May 1966. Train to Kisarazu, taxi to Saino, where met Kayama. We visited troops 5 at Tokogoyama, where 10 rifs. low to date. Then to Kamogawa. 26 May train to Tokyo, Nagoya, Imuyama. And on 27 May conferred with M. Kawai at JMC. Then to Nagoya
