16 April 1966 Sunday Kinkazan Is, Miyagi-ken, Japan
With Azuma & Teroda hiked over area W. of S. Ridge, then to
Top ridge & look N. Saw a few members one group morpup.
Rain to 11a.m. Late afternoon I to summit + N. ridge but saw none. I
think 2 large birds monkeys improbable. / also see M. furcata / notes for 15 April. /
17 April 1966.
Collected Fagus tree & bud sample at 400m, Ridge. //1/10 cumulus today.
I spent 5 hrs. searching for monkey troop, without success. //
The greenish iridescent Geotrupes (aureus or osimannus) living
better now common on trails, tho I saw none rolling dung. Boat to Karui.
21 April 1966. Took train Sendai to Aomori, & stayed overnight.
22 April 1966. Boat to Wakinosawa; windy from SW. Hiked to Kuro -
dorou and Kaijaki canyon. Met S. Azuma there; he had not seen
monkeys today. Common vegetation + phenology. Fagus buds breaking!
23 April 1966. Examined plants; no monkeys came to Kaijaki. Windy.
Saw one woodcock in Kaijaki canyon. Set 5 traps for rats in forest.
24 April 1966. Min. 6°C in Kaijaki shock. Wind stopped, but over
sprinkle. No monkeys to Kaijaki by 0730. Traps took 2 Apodemus
speciosus. Confirmed Azuma - he got no precip. records for Nov.
thru Feb.! Hiked to Wakinosawa. Bus to Aomori, train to Sendai.

-26 April 1966. Train+boat to Kinkazan. Foggy, windy. Teroda said
now 2 infants of monkey. Hiked 4 hrs. but saw none.
27 April 1966. With Tenda found & watched monkey group near main ridge.
Clearing + wind dying morning. At least 2 rips, possibly 3. Fagus not yet w. burnt
buds - behind time at Kaijaki! Oak, Acer palmatum, Carpinus, Juglans, in
state similar to Kaijaki. Anolis was adv. at Kinkazan. See M. furcata notes
for phenology details. / Crows - saw 2 carrying 12" stick in bill, as
if starting nest. Deer - groups 4-6 doe w. fawns + yearlings.
