Kinkazan 13, Miyagi-Ken Japan
Alnus clausa. Plerology - M. Shirai, cherries in full bloom, + 5% new
leaves on old tree. Hotel road (100m), Viburnum erosum buds just
bunting. On main ridge, 3-400 m, Quercus mongolica buds turgid
but not elongated (main big oak on island; few Q. serrata). Zelkova,
Fagus, buds not elongated, nor Castanea, Juglans. Carpinus
Tschon. buds pale + to 2 cm long; slow but early start. Alnus
tree (hiruta?) w. stolon & cathin (dry) along shrine - hotel
road had leaves 2-3 cm. long, + an Alnus tinctoria shrub
had 3 cm. long leafs too. Leucothoe m. Forest Colin, leaves to
3 cm. (but buds <1 cm. on N. ridge top). Aralia elata - new
buds tips, 3 cm (eaten by men). One of shrubs on E. ridge m [illegible]
with bark eaten = Fraxinus sieboldiana (velvete buds); no budding
yet. Azuma thinks other much eaten shrub there is a euphorb. Common
on E. slope, judged by old dry leaves, as Acer diabolicum, Acer palmatum,
and Kalopanax pictifolius (Araliasae; young leaves still said Dr. Yosh-
deer-ioka). He said Acer mono rare on Kinkazan. / Deer - Tensho found a
shed antler; I saw much w. only one to cm. antler, + found 2 shed
antler Apr. 16. I saw a 6" spike w. 2 ?? and a yearling. Also a
spike older limb together; a crow stood on back of snubler, while
showed no alarm when crow flew off. / M. Terada had been
looking for makeup daily & thought them somewhat tame toward
him. On basis also one day, he now thinks 2 groups of 34+;
as he saw one gp. above hotel & later a gp. to W. of ridge 1 km.
farther S. Also he says a gp. of 30707 + 2 solitary males, some-

femin in Shirai - Hotel area. He had seen the infant again too. / Of
the 4 in cage at main shrine, big or right ear C; other ?? (?)
