28-30 March 1966 Tokyo; To Sendai, Japan
Walked on arcto., noted photos NSF 5-yr. report writing. Returned to Tokyo met Prof. Norlett and
To Sendai via train in evening/Dr. Imaizumi.
31 March 1966. Confessed w. Ko Ogasawara, Telephoned Terada on
Kirihazan - he arrived Sendai Apr.1 eve, & we confessed morning of 2 April. He had seen at least 30 monkeys in Kirihazan gps.
4 April 1966. Monday. Train to Ishiimieli, boat to Kirihazan, w.
M. Terada, student from Osaka. Arrived noon. Walked canyons to SE of summit, then N. ridge, but found no troop. Rain evening.
5 April 1966. Some frozen ground; cold wind but few clouds. We searched separately. I saw 1 and he 5 on slope SW of summit, but we found no large troop./deer - some groups 3-4 mil. yearlings.
Once 2雄鹿 together. One gp. 6 den in grassland. Another still present, hard; start of rut? Found carvan tracks about 200 m. buck NE of Frost Colin. Bears must not be in spring (as in U.S.). /Plants - the low common red-stemmed shrub has leaves to 2 cm. in sheltered places at 100 m. level; no leaves atop N. ridge. Pariperae n.

Frost Colin has elongated terminal buds, to 1 cm. - no life apparent chetnut,
in linden branch, Belhors, walnut. Alnus at botal level, buds fresh & plump but no leaves. Prunus tree - buds elongated about 50% on lizards bud scale, in Frost Colin. For flats n.e. streams in shade
Veratrum japonicum or E. sleyer shrunk colloges to 20 cm. (many). And near 2 Erythronum japonicum leaves of "katakuri"(6 pointed gold star flower) frequent. So still only the barest beginnings of spring foliage. A Rose (?)shrub = Rosa multiflora with comp. leaves 2-3cm.; + another shrub with four long spines also stands in Frost Colin.
