Coast N. Kusanomari, Shimokita, Japan
In 1½ hr boat trip along coast No. of Kusanomari; saw harlequin ducks, mergansers, gulls, hiter, comorants, auks or puffins, and a white-tailed sea eagle.
22 March
12 Mo 1966. With K Ogawara & Boff Kford to Kinugan. Windy & overcast. Rained steadily all afternoon; no field work.
23 March 1966. Alt's status, calm. Examined vegetation for signs of spring - nothing notable yet in natural veg., but plums in blossom near shrine, + daffodile, + an evergreen shrub w. rose red flowers.
Hiked around from 5700 to 1630. First to summit & N. along ridge.
Descent shrine, back to summit. Via E. side trail to lighthouse, when got weather info. Then to forest shack. Saw 10+ monkeys about noon, but lost them. Deer still have antlers. Birds seen: Surnulus glandarius, Corvus leucillanti + crow, Chalcocorus capilatus (2) and A. pelagicus, Dryobates higuki (in pair), Moteilla grandis, Bitta europae (K only), Aegithalos caudatus, Parus varius, Pmegor, & P. ater, Chloris sinica (florets 30+ on ground), Passer montorus, Milvus migrans Larus, or Pandion?
24 March 1966. Windy + some ice but clear. To shrine, thence E to ridge & N. on crest but did not find monkey troops. Back S. past summit, thence to shrine & took 1350 boat for Shibonaki. Saw 2 ads. above shrine (solitary ->?). Saw + photographed later, prol. by monkeys. There are few field droppings on trails. (fox/badger?) occasionally, tho no canine tracks noted. No sign of little or squirrel. Saw 1 lizard, & small mole-like mounds & passages reveal places.
