28 February 1966 Takago area; to Tokyo, Japan
Local woodcutter told of seeing group_x in area where no monkeys before the
group split. Area about 4 km. N. of gp. A feeding area. Area of deciduous
trees & shrubs, but some grass & forbs (Plantago) green, & area of
crop fields green. Also grew bamboo, peirer, cryptomeria. Some bucker
w. new leaves. Some plums (?) in blossom. 5/10 overcast; warm. Apparently
warmer & veg. growth more advanced in growth than Kindayan. Back to Tokyo.
2-4 March 1966. In Tokyo. Correspondence, acts, shopping. Then train to
Aomori, arriving morning Mar. 5. Then to Wakinosawa and Kussionari
Mar. 6, Sunday. Snow gone with warm rains except for new patches.
Visited Kaizaki & saw monkey group, apparently intact. Windy & near freezing.

7 March 1966 Observed & photographed monkeys in Kaizaki canyon. One shrub,
Namamelis (spell?), with large yellow flowers some bucker. Some low
evergreen shrubs (Azuraraeps sikimia) on ridge apparently evergreen, w. red
berries. On ridge W. of Kaizaki canyon, leafless branches of Quercus
toth maba
morgelia bark eaten ~~~~~~~~ , as if by mammal smaller
than monkeys. Under melted snow patches, remains as of vole
or shrew. Also found monkey near feeding station fed things
(searched east to N. in forest but saw no more on 10 March)
apples, soy beans, wheat, & peanuts on 8,9,10 March. To Wakinosawa
11 March 1966 To meet Dale Arney of NSF, Tokyo, with photographer
(M. Naito) and USIS writer. Clear day with view of Hakukoda
& Suohi mts; perhaps finest day of year, tho windy on sea.
12 March 1966 To Wakinosawa, & lay train to Aomori. Then on
13 Mar. to Sendai, where stayed 14-21. Looked for housing.

Visited Drs. Koto, Ishii, that Yoshioka in biology dept.
Met grad student Ke Ogawara, w/ population studies, who
will help me at Kinbazan. Dray until 16, then rain/sandy morning.
