21 February 1966 Tsugaru Pen, Nihonshi.
up by jeep to Minami-moto, forest station nr. Moshawa; it
to 5.
about 1' snow there. Up canyon & saw some [illegible] then
saw no sign monkeys. Azuma sa: 'now reported'
a few time in canyon NW of Minami station.
22 February 1966. Walked 2.4 km. up road along Nishi-mo area
to experiment station, which not manned now. Thence 5. up
canyon walked last summer for about 2 km. in snow or
slis. No monkey sign. Cameved evening & colder, so returned to
Minami about 2 p.m. Azuma had questiond people & said loggers
said head monkey was this winter up Minami-moto. So, no leads
on location monkeys. At Minumaya said some reports of N. area
last October, when Azuma last here at Minumaya.
23 February 1966. Light snow all night. Skied down to Minumaya
on road, 4.6 km. Train to Aomori. Toak 2020 train for Sendai
24 February 1966. Tate from Sendai to Shinomaki (2500 yen). Then
0920 boat to Kurayan. Cold but few clouds. Walked 5. along W.
slopes of island, then back N. on ridge, & W. in vicinity hotel. No
sign monkeys, tho possibly heard once. Stayed at the njyoba, at
the shrine. Girl or staff there said 4 monkeys nr. Shrine on Feb. 8.
There were now 4 in cage (8' sq.), 1 old & on chain, 1 free ad. or in
vicinity of shrine.
25 February 1966. Warmer in morning; wind stronger. Hiked up
canyon to E. of shrine & saw at least 8 monkeys near ridge.
Deer - a group of 40+, many w. antlers sawed off, fed daily nr.
shrine. Coats rough & ugly, & animals fat. Away from shrine
some antlers broken, some w. 4" spikes. Conspicuous dark white
