13 May 1957 San Isidro Jd General, Costa Rica
few friends among local people. Apparently he likes
the isolation - he had been here 20 years (left road
to San Jose only 12 years ago). Recently A.S.
had published a thick book on "the search for the
divine," but we did not discuss this. (A review in
recent Spanish by Archie Carr in a philosophical paper of
Univ. C.R.). Apparently Shutch had never heard
of my condor work, & I suspect that he paid
little attention to what other ornithologists were
doing. He did no farm work himself, tho
Juan thought he had on his place a family which
farmed & paid rent in produce. Banana growing
nearly, & coffee in surrounding area. Elev. at Shutch's
about 2500 ft., & of San Isidro about 2200, A.S. thought.
16 May 1957 Boquete, Chiriqui, Panama
We flew via COPA from San Jose, C.R., to David, over
thick evergreen forests of southeastern C.R. David low
and hot, but 11000 ft. Volcan dominates the view.
A good paved road about 25 mi. up to Boquete,
at 3800 ft. Town lies in bottom of a forested bowl,
but much forest second growth, & much coffee
growing on steep slopes. We stayed in house
overlooking town, loaned by Mrs. Marita Mancioy
of Panama (cage bird fancier). Much rain.
17 May 1957 We climbed several hundred feet up
a slope to the Piedra del Loro, where we had a fine
view and took a few 35 mm. pictures.
18 May 1957 Hiked up a road to NE of town, &
a short distance into forest. Heard many interesting
but unrecognized bird songs. Good camping for
collecting spot here in secondwoods. Saw several
small-billed green toucans in patch forest next
to a cafe/teal. Mounds suggested gophers on forest
floor.
19 May 1957 Flew back to Tocumen, Panama,
