17 February 1966 N. Kusodomari, Komori-Ken, Japan
With S. Azuma, walked K. to Kaijorii canyon, up to top of W
& back to K. Snow 1-2' in canyon bottom; <1' on ridge.
Sked +6° C. 1100, +3° at 1300, Ag. said saw 1 monkey to [illegible]
ridge; gone when I arrived. We saw 3 Capricornis
red-brow cross, with half-grown young, standing
[illegible] distant on open rocky point, looking at us,
from them (Azuma photod, 35mm). Photod some of the
tree. Capricornis has many dry leaves clinging.
Of deer more (tree 24) for analysis; some bark seen
prob. by monkeys, on brancher <1" diam. Bare
section of 1" diam. trunk of small Pinus Thunbergii, dense
wood, shape of cut bark [illegible], prob. monkey work. Also saw
barked places, recent, on Kalopanax branches, near ridge;
branches ½" to 1" diam. (photod). Took various general
notes to show winter state vegetation. Only Cryptomeria,
Juniperus (small shrubs), and Thujopsis were green. /Ag.

brought to food shed area but no wire at ends, & new
plywood door swelled tight shut. / Wind today from NE,
very [illegible] shore water not rough, & could have looked for monkeys
from boat. / Stayed Kusodomari for night.
18 February 1966. Hiked to Kusodomari & took boat to Aomoi,
arriving about 1200. Stayed at Sei Yo So (ryokan).
21 February 1966. With S. Azuma (+ wife) took 0920 train to
Moriyama on Tsurugane Benin. Visited Forestry office. They sent
