Koford 41 Journal 30 January 1966 To Inuyama, Aichi, Japan Arrived Osaka 1405 on Cathay Pacific from Hong Kong, with Ralph, Carla, Kristi. Met by Azuma, Kayano, Kawamura. Taxi to Osaka, & train to Nagoya, local train to Inuyama. Dale Arvey of NSF there. 31 January 1966. With Arvey & Azuma, conferred w. Kawai & others at Japan Monkey Center. 1-3 February 1966. Worked on accounts & work plans at JMC. Still no boat or shack built at Shimabita, yet but at Tokozo and Ko- sheira we're going as planned. Azuma & Kayano had spent Nov, 16-29 in Tsugawa Peninsula area, where latter saw monkeys in area nr. Kanito. No primatology done at Gogyuzan. But nutrition samples collected once in fall at Tokozo, Shimabita, & Kosheira. Kawai had used $1000 advance from me toward construction. Work on Kosheira, where Yazhiba working, so many other things went aside because lack funds. 4 February 1966. To Nagoya & Tokyo by train. Correspondence, office work, shopping to February 8, when departed for Aomori. In Aomori Feb. 9-15, during which rain & snow every day except last. February 16, 1966, to Wakinosawa by train & bus. Then car to end road & walked to Kurodonari in strong cold wind. Azuma reported no field work possible until 15th. He had heard of apparent monkeys N. of Kaijokai valley, & fishermen reported seeing (about 4-5 Feb., 6-7) some on shore about 1 mile N. of Kurodonari twice recently, within 10 days. Monkey nr. Kurodonari occurs in Jan. to 29th. Azuma says last fall Mori spent about 10 days looking for "S. troop" farther north and saw some. Weather instruments read at Kurodonari school since Sept. 1, nearly every day, by schoolboy. Azuma says fishermen say less snow than usual this winter, but 3 1/2 cold snaps Dec-Jan extra
